Old photos of Seminoles 1890-1960 Prominent in this video is Mr. Billie Bowlegs III(1862-1965). He has a mustache the whole way through this video. He was half Indian and half black. His black parent was possibly a run away slave. He was a remarkable man
My Mother is/was Qualla Cherokee and my father is/was Seminole. Both passed away long ago.

Seminoles became very secretive after the hide and seek with the US gov. The Seminoles in Florida are the only tribe in the US never to sign a peace treaty of surrender. This was before telegragh and photgraphs. Trying to remove the Seminold was either THE most expensive of the Indians wars or the second. It ws definately the longest. In the end the US gov. turned and walked away. And all that beautiful patchwork was made from scraps of rags. That's why the patterns are so small.

Great vid and great music. I didn't know that much about Seminoles except from a few pictures. Many Europeans only think about the Sioux and Comanches if they think about Native Americans and don't know how many different tribes there actually were in North-and South America. It's great that the less known tribes also get attention.Btw, handsome guy at 2.22

I know Indian people had it really hard back then. I think things got better for our people around the later 1900's when missions and schools started coming in, even though Native peoples culture was to be terminated. Alot of us still hold the traditions and culture in our hearts. I would not have wanted to live back in those years.

I could not agree with any comment more. What in the world is the hold up with his marker? I would love to visit him where he lies. He was a great great man. He lived to be 103 didn't he?

I live near where Billie Bowlegs III is buried, and visit there often because I have a friend who is buried a few yards away. There was a historical marker about him on highway 27&S.R. 78, but it disappeared. Glades County highway said that it was taken down for cleaning and repair, and this has been over a year and it is still gone. It should be moved to where he is buried.
