The Department has facilities to allow you to develop practical technical skills (eg pattern cutting, production methods, knitwear print, computing, styling) and theoretical knowledge textiles within the concept of fashion projects. All single honours sandwich degree courses have strong industry links including industry-sponsored projects with the opportunity of an industrial placement element during the third year providing a valuable insight into the fashion business. Experience gained from working with names such as Coast, Burberry, Adams, Oasis, Reebok UK, Jo-y-Jo, New Look, Bureaux, Burton Menswear, Levi Marketing, Mixmag, Adidas Promotions, and Marks and Spencer helps to prepare our graduates for their future careers helping them to make a decision about their career direction. Trips are arranged both at home and abroad to see fashion shows and exhibitions and you will have the opportunity to enter major design competitions and submit work for inclusion in high profile exhibitions both nationally and internationally.Learning within the fashion areas is an interactive process and you are expected to adopt the role of reflective practitioner. Throughout this process you will engage in critical thought, independent learning and creative problem solving. Most of your learning will take place in a studio enviroment, carried out in the dedicated year studios, with structured tutorial sessions timetabled throught the semesters. Tutors will monitor, assess and evaluate work in progress and assess completed projects. You will also be expected to take responsibility for a degree of self managed research time. Each module comprises a series of projects or assignments with clear aims and learning outcomes which are individually assessed, often through group critiques. A variety of formative and summative feedback is used. Module assessment takes the form of a folio submission at the end of the semester.
